[:en]The application of nanotechnology in medicine has led husband and wife Marko Lopari\u0107 and Marija Plodinec to discover a new, faster way to diagnose cancer in patients, which will significantly shorten the time it takes doctors to discover it. These PhD holders, who have been living and working in Basel for ten years, have invented a device called Artidis, based on the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), which operates by applying to the surface under examination a mechanical probe the size of 20 nanometers. The Atomic Force Microscope is a thousand times more accurate than a microscope. It was invented in 1986 by IBM scientists Gerd Binnig, Heinrich Rohrer and Christof Berger in Zurich, earning them a Nobel Prize for physics. In cooperation with Gerber, the husband and wife began to experiment in order to adjust the device for medical use. They discovered that cancer cells have different mechanical properties both with respect to other cells and amongst themselves, which enabled them to accurately predict how the tumor would spread. This is very important because without proper markers, the doctors prescribe chemotherapy, which is not necessary for all the affected patients.<\/p>\n
The final phase of testing Artidis will be carried out next year and it should be on the market, that is, in the departments of radiology and pathology, in three years.<\/p>\n
The spouses were brought together by a passion for science and medicine, and the emergence of Artidis is linked to their decision to enrol, after finishing school, in graduate studies in the field of structural biology and biophysics in Basel in 2005. Following their interest in the application of nanotechnology in medicine and in the nanomechanics of tissue cells, AFM technology becomes the focus of their research. The advantage of Artidis is that does not require the preparation of tissue to be sent for analysis, but rather, a piece of tissue is placed in the device and the patient can receive the result within three hours. This will not only reduce costs, but also allow pathologists to dedicate themselves more to malignant diseases. The focus is on breast cancer, but good results were also recorded in the analysis of other malignant diseases such as prostate, liver, lung and colon cancer.<\/p>\n
In 2012, Artidis was named one of the most innovative devices in Switzerland at the Swiss Innovation Forum.<\/p>\n

Doktori znanosti koji ve\u0107 deset godina \u017eive i rade u Baselu izumili su ure\u0111aj Artidis na bazi Atomic Force Microscopea (AFM-a) koji radi tako da povr\u0161inu koju pregledava dodiruje mehani\u010dkom sondom veli\u010dine 20 nanometara. Atomic Force Microscope tisu\u0107u je puta precizniji od mikroskopa a izumili su ga 1986. godine IBM-ovi znanstvenici Gerd Binnig, Heinrich Rohrer i Christof Berger u Zurichu, za \u0161to su dobili Nobelovu nagradu za fiziku. U suradnji s Gerberom supru\u017enici su po\u010deli eksperimentirati kako bi ure\u0111aj prilagodili medicini. Otkrili su da stanice raka imaju druk\u010dija mehani\u010dka svojstva od ostalih stanica te da se i one me\u0111usobno mehani\u010dki razlikuju, \u0161to im je omogu\u0107ilo da precizno prognoziraju kako \u0107e se tumor \u0161iriti. Potonje je vrlo va\u017eno jer bez pravog markera tj. prognoze lije\u010dnici propisuju kemoterapiju, \u0161to nije nu\u017enost kod svih oboljelih pacijenata.<\/p>\n
Zavr\u0161na faza testiranja Artidisa provest \u0107e se sljede\u0107e godine, dok bi on na tr\u017ei\u0161te, odnosno u odjele radiologije i patologije, trebao iza\u0107i za tri godine.<\/p>\n
Supru\u017enike je spojila strast za znano\u0161\u0107u i medicinom, a nastanak Artidisa povezan je s njihovom odlukom da nakon zavr\u0161enog fakulteta u Hrvatskoj upi\u0161u postdiplomski studij na podru\u010dju strukturalne biologije i biofizike u Baselu 2005. godine. Zainteresiranima za primjenu nanotehnologije u medicini te nanomehaniku tkiva stanica, AFM tehnologija im postaje fokus istra\u017eivanja. Prednost Artidisa je da ne zahtjeva pripremu tkiva koje se \u0161alje na analizu, ve\u0107 se komad tkiva postavi u ure\u0111aj i u roku od tri sata pacijent dobije nalaz. Time se ne smanjuju samo tro\u0161kovi, ve\u0107 \u0107e se patolozi mo\u0107i vi\u0161e posvetiti malignim bolestima. Fokus je trenutno na raku dojke, a zabilje\u017eeni su i rezultati analize ostalih zlo\u0107udnih bolesti kao \u0161to su rak prostate, jetre, plu\u0107a i debelog crijeva.<\/p>\n

Diese Wissenschaftler mit Doktorgrad, die schon seit zehn Jahren in Basel leben und arbeiten, haben das Ger\u00e4t Artidis aufgrund von Atomkraftmikroskop (Atomic Force Microscope, AFM) erfunden, das die Oberfl\u00e4che, die es pr\u00fcft, mit einer mechanischen Sonde von 20 Nanometer ber\u00fchrt. Das Atomkraftmikroskop ist tausendmal pr\u00e4ziser als Mikroskop und wurde 1986 von IBM-Wissenschaftlern Gerd Binnig, Heinrich Rohrer und Christof Berger in Z\u00fcrich erfunden, wof\u00fcr sie den Nobelpreis f\u00fcr Physik bekommen haben. In Zusammenarbeit mit Gerber hat das Ehepaar zu experimentieren begonnen, um das Ger\u00e4t der Verwendung in der Medizin anzupassen. Sie haben entdeckt, dass die Krebszellen andere mechanische Eigenschaften als die \u00fcbrigen Zellen haben, und dass sie sich auch untereinander mechanisch unterscheiden, was ihnen erm\u00f6glichen wird, genau zu prognostizieren, wie sich der Tumor verbreiten wird. Letzteres ist sehr wichtig, weil die \u00c4rzte ohne die richtigen Marker, bzw. ohne die richtige Prognose, die Chemotherapie vorschrieben, was nicht f\u00fcr alle Patienten notwendig ist.<\/p>\n
Die Endstufe der Artidis-Pr\u00fcfung wird folgendes Jahr durchgef\u00fchrt werden, und auf dem Markt soll es in drei Jahre erreichbar sein, in den Abteilungen f\u00fcr Radiologie und Pathologie.<\/p>\n
Das Ehepaar wurde durch die Leidenschaft f\u00fcr Wissenschaft und Medizin verbunden, und die Entwicklung von Artidis steht in Verbindung mit ihrer Entscheidung, nach der beendeten Fakult\u00e4t in Kroatien, das Nachdiplomstudium auf dem Gebiet der strukturellen Biologie und Biophysik in Basel in 2005 aufzunehmen. Da sie f\u00fcr die Anwendung der Nanotechnologie in der Medizin und f\u00fcr Nanomechanik der Zellenstruktur interessiert waren, wurde die AFM-Technologie der Fokus ihrer Forschung. Es ist der Vorteil des Artidis, dass es keine Vorbereitung des Gewebes, das zur Analyse geschickt wird, erfordert, sondern das St\u00fcck des Gewebes wird in das Ger\u00e4t gestellt und innerhalb von drei Uhr bekommt der Patient den Befund. Das reduziert nicht nur die Kosten, sondern gibt die Pathologen die Chance, sich mehr den malignen Krankheiten zu widmen. Der Fokus ist jetzt auf dem Brustkrebs, und es gibt auch Ergebnisse der Analyse \u00fcbriger b\u00f6sartigen Krankheiten wie Prostata-, Leber-, Lungen- und Dickdarmkrebs.<\/p>\n
Im Jahr 2012 wurde Artidis f\u00fcr eines der innovativsten Ger\u00e4te bei dem Swiss Innovation Forum in der Schweiz erkl\u00e4rt.
